Look around any café, metro or office in Dubai and you’ll see the same posture: head down, neck bent, eyes on a phone. We spend hours a day like this, and our necks are quietly paying for it. “Tech neck” is the modern name for a very real, and very fixable, problem.
What is tech neck?
Tech neck is neck pain and stiffness from long hours in a head-forward, looking-down posture over phones and laptops. The further forward your head drops, the more load your neck muscles have to hold, hour after hour. It isn’t that the posture itself is evil, it’s the sheer amount of time we spend in it without a break.
Why it causes pain
Your neck muscles are designed to hold your head up, but not to do it in a strained forward position for hours on end. Held there long enough, the muscles fatigue and tighten, the joints get overloaded, and the whole area starts to ache. This is the same mechanism behind a lot of tension headaches, since the upper neck refers pain into the head.
Is the damage permanent?
No, and this is important, because the scare stories online suggest otherwise. Your neck is adaptable. The problem is a load-and-time problem, not permanent damage, and it responds well to changing the load and building the neck’s tolerance. You don’t need to panic about posture, you need to move more and load smarter.
What actually helps
- Move often. The best fix is breaking up the time, not achieving a perfect posture.
- Raise your screens closer to eye level so your head isn’t dropping.
- Strengthen the neck and upper back so they tolerate load better.
- Treat what’s already sore so you start from a clean slate.
How a physiotherapist helps
A physiotherapist can settle the current pain, free up the stiff areas, and use targeted postural correction and breathing techniques to build the neck’s tolerance so screen time stops hurting. Just as importantly, they’ll show you that you don’t have to live in fear of your phone, you just have to give your neck variety and strength.
Frequently asked questions
Is looking down at my phone really that bad?
In short bursts, no. The issue is hours of it without breaks. Variety and movement solve most of it.
Will bad posture damage my neck permanently?
No. Necks are adaptable, and tech neck is a reversible, load-based problem.
Do posture correctors work?
They’re not a fix. Movement and strengthening do far more than a device that holds you in one position.
If phone and screen time is leaving your neck sore, it’s very treatable and not permanent. A physiotherapist can settle it and build your neck’s resilience. You can book a session here.
