Pinched Nerve in the Neck: Arm Pain, Tingling and Relief

Marcos Jusdado - Dubai Physiotherapist

When neck pain comes with pain, tingling or numbness travelling down the arm, it feels alarming. It suggests a nerve is involved, and the word “pinched” makes it sound serious. In most cases it’s very treatable, and understanding what’s happening takes a lot of the fear out of it.

What is a pinched nerve in the neck?

Nerves leave the spine in your neck and travel down into your arms and hands. A “pinched” nerve, medically cervical radiculopathy, is when one of these nerves gets irritated or compressed near the neck, often by a disc bulge or some stiffness and swelling. Because the nerve runs into the arm, you feel it along its path, not just in the neck.

What does it feel like?

  • Pain, tingling or numbness travelling from the neck into the shoulder, arm or hand
  • Symptoms sometimes following a specific line down the arm
  • Occasionally weakness in part of the arm or hand
  • Often eased or worsened by certain neck positions

Do pinched nerves heal?

Yes, the great majority settle without surgery. Like a disc in the back, the irritation calms and the body reabsorbs what’s pressing on the nerve over weeks to months. The pain can be sharp while it’s active, but the outlook is genuinely good, and rushing to surgery is rarely necessary.

How does a physiotherapist help?

A physiotherapist can confirm it really is a nerve, calm the irritation, and use specific movements that gently take pressure off and glide the nerve to settle symptoms. Hands-on manual therapy eases the stiff neck around it, and a gradual strengthening plan protects it going forward. The aim is full recovery without an operation.

When to seek urgent care

Most pinched nerves are not urgent, but get seen promptly if you develop significant or worsening weakness in the arm or hand, or if symptoms appear in both arms or legs. These are uncommon but need quicker assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Will a pinched nerve go away on its own?

Usually yes, over weeks to months, and treatment can speed it up and ease the symptoms in the meantime.

Do I need surgery?

Rarely. Most cases resolve with conservative treatment.

Should I rest my arm completely?

No. Gentle, guided movement helps. Total rest tends to stiffen things up.

If neck pain is sending symptoms down your arm, it’s usually a treatable, non-surgical problem. A physiotherapist can settle the nerve and guide your recovery. You can book a session here.
