When Stretching and Massage Stop Working: What’s Next

Marcos Jusdado - Dubai Physiotherapist

You stretch it every day. You book the massage. It feels great for an evening, maybe a day, and then the tightness creeps straight back. If you’ve been stuck in that cycle, it’s worth knowing why, because the answer changes what you should do next.

Why does the tightness keep coming back?

A muscle that stays tight no matter how much you stretch it usually isn’t tight because it’s short. It’s tight because your nervous system is holding it there on purpose, often to protect something. Stretching and massage change how it feels for a while, but they don’t change the reason the brain is keeping it switched on. So it returns.

What is the nervous system protecting?

It could be an irritated joint nearby, a weak or poorly controlled area that the tight muscle is compensating for, or an old injury the system never fully stood down from. The tight muscle is often the symptom, not the source. Chasing it directly is like silencing a smoke alarm without checking for the fire.

So what actually helps?

Finding and treating the reason for the guarding. That usually means:

  • Assessing the whole area, not just the tight spot, to find what it’s compensating for
  • Restoring movement and control where it’s actually missing
  • Using functional neurology techniques to update the signals telling the muscle to stay on
  • Then rebuilding the area through functional movement therapy, loading and strengthening so the change holds

When the driver is addressed, the muscle often lets go on its own, and stays let go.

Does that mean stretching is useless?

Not at all. Stretching and massage have their place and can feel great. They just aren’t enough on their own when the tightness is being driven by something else. Used alongside treatment that addresses the cause, they’re helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the same muscle keep getting tight?

Because the underlying reason for the guarding hasn’t changed. Address that, and the pattern usually breaks.

Should I stop stretching?

No, keep it if it helps you feel better. Just don’t rely on it alone to fix a recurring problem.

How long until it improves?

Once the real driver is treated, many people notice the tightness stops returning within a few sessions.

If stretching and massage only ever buy you a day, the tightness has a driver worth finding. A physiotherapist can track it down and treat it. You can book a session here.
