Morning Back Stiffness: Causes and How to Fix It

Marcos Jusdado - Dubai Physiotherapist

You wake up, and before you’ve even got out of bed your lower back feels stiff and achy. The first few movements are tight, maybe getting out of bed is a careful operation, and then, after twenty or thirty minutes of moving around, it loosens up. If that’s your morning, you’re far from alone.

Why is my back stiff in the morning?

A few things combine overnight. You’ve been still for hours, so the tissues haven’t moved and fluid shifts within the spine. If your muscles are already a bit deconditioned or guarded, they stiffen further with inactivity. Add an unsupportive mattress or an awkward sleeping position and you wake up tight. The fact that it eases with movement is actually reassuring, it points to a mechanical, treatable cause.

Is morning stiffness a bad sign?

Usually not. Stiffness that loosens within half an hour of moving is typically mechanical and benign. What’s worth checking is stiffness that lasts much longer, well over an hour, especially in a younger person or alongside other symptoms, as that can point to an inflammatory cause worth a medical opinion.

What helps?

  • Gentle movement first thing, rather than rushing straight into your day
  • Building general back and core strength so the tissues cope better with rest
  • Checking your mattress and sleeping position
  • Staying active through the day, since a sedentary day feeds a stiff morning

How a physiotherapist helps

A physiotherapist can work out why your back stiffens overnight, whether it’s deconditioning, a guarded pattern, or something in how you sleep, and address it. Treatment usually combines hands-on manual therapy to settle the current stiffness, with a simple strength and movement plan to stop it building back up.

Frequently asked questions

Does my mattress cause morning back pain?

It can contribute, but it’s rarely the whole story. Strength, movement and posture usually matter more than the mattress alone.

Should I stretch as soon as I wake up?

Gentle movement helps. You don’t need aggressive stretching, just easing the back into the day.

When should I get it checked?

If the stiffness lasts more than an hour, is getting worse, or comes with other symptoms, it’s worth an assessment.

If you’re waking up stiff and achy most mornings, it usually has a simple, treatable cause. A physiotherapist can find it and settle it. You can book a session here.
